Connect your Instagram account

Link Instagram to your store so Milo can post for you.

Milo drafts your social posts. Connect your Instagram account and Milo can publish the photos and captions you have approved straight to Instagram. No copying, no pasting and no switching apps at the moment you are least in the mood for it.

What Instagram requires

This is Instagram's rule rather than ours. To let any app post on your behalf, Instagram requires your account to be:

  • Public, not private

  • Professional, either Business or Creator

Both professional account types are free. Instagram does not charge to switch, there is no upgrade to buy and no plan to pick. Switching takes about 1 minute. Your posts, followers and username all stay exactly as they are.

If yours is a personal account, Instagram walks you through switching while you connect. The section below covers what to expect.

Connect it

Have your Instagram login to hand before you start. You sign in to Instagram itself as part of this, so it is worth knowing which account you are connecting and being able to get into it.

Ask Milo to connect your Instagram. Instagram also appears on any social post Milo drafts for you, under Autopost, with a Connect button beside it.

Minicart tells you what Instagram requires first. Click Continue to Instagram and a window opens on Instagram. Log in if you are not already signed in, then approve the connection. When the window closes you are back in Minicart. A message names the handle that connected so you know which account landed.

Keep going once you start. The connection stays open for 10 minutes while you are away. If you get pulled into switching your account type or resetting a password, finish that first, then start the connection again from Minicart.

Switching to a professional account

If Instagram tells you the account is not eligible, you are on a personal account. Instagram handles the switch itself and hands you back when it is done. Again, it costs nothing.

Pick Business or Creator

Both are free and both work with Minicart. Pick Business if you are unsure. It suits retailers, local businesses and brands, which covers most Minicart stores. It also gives you a contact button on your profile and shopping features.

Creator suits artists, makers and anyone building a following around themselves rather than a store. It keeps full access to Instagram's music library, which Business accounts do not have.

You can move between the two later without losing anything, so there is no need to agonize over it.

Pick a category

Shopping & retail is a safe pick for most stores. Product/service and Art work well too. The category is a label rather than a setting. It does not change what Minicart can do. Untick Show category on profile if you would rather it did not appear under your name.

Confirm the switch

The last screen is the one worth reading. Professional accounts are public. If your account was private it becomes public here. Any pending follow requests are approved automatically. There is no undo on those approvals, so clear out any requests you would rather not accept before you switch.

Once you click Continue, the switch is done. Head back to Minicart and click Connect again.

You do not need a Facebook Page

Plenty of tools make you create a Facebook Page and link it to Instagram before they will post anything. Minicart signs you in to Instagram directly, so that is the whole handshake. If you already have a Page linked to your account, nothing changes.

After you connect

Milo drafts the post and shows it to you first. Nothing is saved without your approval. See Working with Milo on marketing.

You can disconnect any time from the same place you connected. Disconnecting stops future posts. Anything already published on Instagram stays where it is.

If it does not connect

  • Instagram says the account is not eligible. The account is either still personal or still private. Both are fixed by the switch above.

  • The window closed and nothing happened. Usually the connection ran past its 10 minute limit while you were switching account types. Start it again, now that the account is ready.

  • The wrong account connected. If you are signed in to more than one Instagram account in that browser, use the dots menu in the Instagram sign-in pop-up and choose Switch Account to pick the right one, then disconnect and connect again.

  • Minicart says your browser is too old. Update your browser, then try again.

  • The connection expired. Disconnect, then connect again to keep posting.

Still stuck

If a screen inside Instagram does not match the steps above, Instagram's help center has their current instructions. If the connection itself will not take, reach out through Contact support in the left sidebar and we will take a look with you.
